ABOUT BWAFP
The Bronx-Westchester Academy of Family Physicians is happy to welcome you to our website.
The Bronx Westchester Academy of Family Physicians is the county chapter of the New York State Academy of Family Physicians, which is the state chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians. Together, with other state and county chapters around the country, we form the medical body that represents the clinical, political and educational interests of practicing Family Physicians.
BWAFP chapter officials hope to further the efforts of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the New York State Academy, by focusing on the Academies’ pursuit to improve the health of the people of our counties through advocating for cost-effective, comprehensive, continuity of care. The chapter is bracing for the needs of regional Family Physicians through continuing medical education activities. We also support the representation of ideas from community physicians through presenting resolutions at the state and national level.
The BWAFP works to promote the field of family medicine amongst medical students and to enhance the residency experience of family medicine residents.
We host various events throughout the year and take an active role in the NYSAFP Congress of Delegates. We also sponsor research, grant academic and non-academic honors and awards in recognition of achievement in the science and practice of medicine and surgery.
BWAFP is governed by a Board and its county members. BWAFP meets every 3-4 months in varying locations in the Bronx and Westchester counties. All active AAFP Physicians, Residents and Medical Student members, residing or working in the Bronx and/or Westchester counties, are invited to participate in BWAFP meetings and activities.
Our parent chapter, the NYSAFP is governed by a Congress of Delegates and by a board of directors which implements policies established by the Congress. Six commissions assist the board: Advocacy, Education, Leadership, Membership, Operations and Public Health. They meet in Albany every 3-4 months. BWAFP members, including residents and medical students are encouraged to participate in the commissions.
There is a Congress held yearly where each county chapter sends delegates to vote on Academy issues. Resolutions are presented at congress (written proposals for policy changes) and are voted upon by the NYSAFP delegates. The resolutions that are accepted become part of NYSAFP & local chapter policy. The academy allocates funding for residents and medical students interested in attending and participating in the Congress of delegates.
